  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch baking pan and line with parchment paper.
  2. Peel and thinly slice the apples; set aside.
  3. In one bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.
  4. In another bowl, mix melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed; the batter will be thick.
  6. Spread half the batter into the prepared pan and layer with half the apple slices.
  7. Spread remaining batter over apples and top with remaining apple slices.
  8. Mix sugar and cinnamon for topping; sprinkle over the cake.
  9. Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
