Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if beef is leaner)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: ½ cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • ½ cup milk (whole or 2%)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add diced onion and sauté until soft; stir in minced garlic.
  3. Mix in tomato paste followed by flour; gradually add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Season with thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt for the dumplings; mix in softened butter until crumbly. Stir in milk to form a dough.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough onto the beef mixture. Cover and cook on low heat for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
